What does “Wellness” mean to you: happiness, mindfulness, fitness, nutrition, body/mind/spirit, sleep, stress, purpose, intimacy…the list goes on
Canyon Ranch is often tagged as a camp for weight loss or addiction treatment, when in fact it is much more. It is everything and more that I have mentioned above – a place for personal discovery and finding the happiest, healthiest you.

When I arrived at Tucson Airport the Canyon Ranch team was there to greet me at baggage claim and whisk us all away in their private shuttle, which right away put me at ease and I didn’t have to worry about anything from here on.

Check-in was smooth and before I knew it I was chauffeured to my room.  I felt like I was in a glamping campground.  The grounds were perfectly manicured with peaceful sounding water features and walkways throughout the whole ranch.  It was so calm and quiet…why? Because there are no cell phones allowed on the premises except in certain areas.  There are no phones ringing or loud conversations – only pure peaceful bliss!
The accommodation is much more than glamping! My room was very large with a king size bed with pillow menu, sleep machine, 2 huge flat screen TV’s and sitting area. I was living the dream now!

Now let’s talk about my favourite part of travelling- the food. There are 2 dining options here- the café and the dining room.  Both options have menus that include the nutritional value of each menu option.  Everything here is good for you!  It’s healthy food.  There are no chips soaked in palm oil and no candies coated in sugar.  However, there are healthy alternatives that make you forget all about those “bad foods” and you start to appreciate meals and desserts that are good for you.  The Ranch holds cooking classes and offers many of the recipes online also so you can stick with the healthy, clean eating when you leave.
The Spa…ahhh…I am definitely living the dream now!  Canyon Ranch is well known for their amazing spa services and I was determined to put this to the test! I received the best massage that I have ever experienced and that alone is worth going back! There are hot tubs, saunas, make-up artists, hair salons and aestheticians. There are also 2 outdoor pools were you can lounging poolside.  Every night before going to bed a dip in the hot tub to wind down is just what every person needs.

Now onto the what Canyon Ranch does best – their classes. Endless Possibilities. There are enough different classes here to keep you busy every hour for 3 months! Incredible!  From fitness to cooking, from crafting to lectures, there is something for everyone and the only problem is deciding which one to go to.  Upon arrival they give you the week’s program that is nicely laid out day by day, hour by hour- so you can select and call it in or take it the reception to pre-book.  Warning… the classes do fill up.
Here is a small example of the classes:

  • morning hike
  • indoor cycling
  • cardio circuit
  • stretch
  • yoga
  • aqua shape
  • lecture- the science to weight loss
  • golf clinic
  • desert drumming
  • meditation
  • lunch and learn demo kitchen
  • Zumba
  • drawing and sketching
  • bird watching
  • lecture- finding purpose and meaning in your life and work
  • astrology
  • leather wrist jewellery
  • wow your brows makeup class

This doesn’t even scratch the surface and even in this list that I have randomly provided, I bet you can find at least 3 that would be of interest to you!
Water Feature - Canyon Ranch
Everyone is different, but for me it took a day or two to get out of my comfort zone and really embrace what the resort had to offer.  To be able to put aside the shyness of walking in a class, going to dinner and afraid of ordering too much and not allowing yourself to be fully happy and enjoy…all those personal inhabitations that hold you back from really letting yourself go and embracing the wellness lifestyle is exhilarating!
When you finally allow yourself to accept this lifestyle, you will have an Aha! moment and the revelation of just how great you can really feel and should feel and that’s when you say to yourself…I never want to leave this place!

Karina Thompson
At 18 years of age I left home to work for year at Lake Louise in the beautiful Rockies and that is when it all began! After taking year-long leaves from my places of employment, I decided to go to school for Travel and Tourism at Westervelt College and cure this love I had for travel by being able to talk to others and help them book their travel. In 2006-2007 I moved to the UK on a 2 year working holiday visa and spent 1 year in London, and 1 year in Brighton. This was my first real culture shock away from home and I loved every minute of it! During this time I took a 48-day /18 country Contiki trip through Europe (18-30 year olds). It was the longest trip they offered at the time and let me tell you nothing can prepare you for this! I will never regret how much I saw and experienced on this trip. In 2008 I moved to Australia on a 1 year work visa and explored the Gold Coast but spent most of my time in North Tropical Queensland in a town called Port Douglas where I met some friends and before I knew it was on a sailing crew, participating in 2 Australian Regattas. This was unimaginable to me and still is as I had never before sailed! In 2010 I moved to Toronto and started working in the travel industry with Transat Holiday / Nolitours / Jonview and Corporate Traveller before making the move to return to my native roots in Huron County where I hope to share my love of travel, my experiences and knowledge to make your vacation dreams come true!
